Zaanse Schans Windmill Village

In the 18th and 19th centuries, a collection of functional windmills, wooden homes, stables, and shops may be seen in the windmill town of Zaanse Schans, which is an outdoor museum. All of these structures were relocated here starting in 1961, revitalizing the Zaan region’s most profitable era.

Enter one windmill which is included in your excursion, and see how these wind-powered industries operate. Get out on the balcony to experience the power of the wind yourself and to enjoy the lovely view of the countryside.

Het Jonge Schaap Windmill

In Zaandam, the original 1680 sawmill known as “Het Jonge Schaap” was destroyed in 1942. Based on the original construction designs that date back hundreds of years, a copy was constructed on the Zaanse Schans between 2005 and 2007. Modern computer techniques and minute measurements from 1942 were also used. One of the project’s goals was to protect millwrighting as a craft for upcoming generations.

Dutch Boat Tours – Zaanse Schans

Cruising gently along the Zaan River, a boat tour around Zaanse Schans offers a unique and peaceful way to explore one of the Netherlands’ most iconic historic villages. As you drift past the shoreline, the scenery unfolds like a painting—rows of beautifully preserved and UNESCO protected 18th and 19th-century windmills, traditional green wooden houses, and quaint bridges evoke the charm of a bygone era, 25-minute boat ride.

Volendam

You will visit the iconic dike in Volendam with a view on the lakeside. Visit a cheese shop still making cheese using a traditional Dutch method, and join a demonstration about Volendam cheese.

Volendam is a former fishing town and known for its great fish specialties, the famous Dutch “Salty Haring’, ‘Smoked Eel”and Smoked Mackerel. Here you can have a traditional fish for lunch.

Simone Hoeve Cheese Farm

It is a surprise! And you’ll get to be near Dutch cows.

Broek in Waterland

Broek in Waterland and is known for its charming, well-preserved 17th- and 18th-century wooden houses, serene canals, and peaceful rural atmosphere.

Historical Character: The village became prosperous in the 17th century due to trade and fishing. Wealthy merchants from Amsterdam built summer homes here, and many of the pastel-colored wooden houses from that era still remain in pristine condition.

Canals and Nature: As the name suggests (“broek” means marsh, and “waterland” is self-explanatory), the village is surrounded by wetlands and waterways. It offers tranquil views and is popular for cycling, boating and walking.

The tour ends at the designated departure location.
