This journey takes you to the Van Gogh Village Museum (Vincentre) - A full day in the life of Vincent van Gogh in Nuenen, Brabant.The visit starts at the Van Gogh Village Museum (Vincentre) in Nuenen. The museum depicts the life and work of Vincent van Gogh, the “peasant painter,” who lived in Brabant.
This is a child-friendly activity. Young visitors can discover the museum using the ‘In search of Vincent’ discovery trail. It can be used by children from the youngest to the upper years of primary education: anyone can go on a voyage of discovery.
Vincent van Gogh, who was thirty at the time, moved back to his hometown of Nuenen in 1883 to live with his parents at the vicarage on de Berg. As he developed his artistic abilities, Van Gogh drew inspiration from the farmers, weavers, and laborers in the nearby village. This is where he painted a quarter of his works, including The Potato Eaters.
At the LightLab People of all ages can go in search of perspective and light, just as Van Gogh did in his time. Light is colour, and colour is light. But what is colour? What is light? What can we really see? How does experiencing light really work?
After the museum visit, you’re invited to go on a self-guided walk. You will be given a booklet called “Out and about with Vincent” which will show you two walks: a 2 kilometer walk and a 3.5 kilometer walk.
Discover Nuenen and its surroundings in the footsteps of Vincent van Gogh. You can get really close to Vincent in Nuenen. Not only can your tread in his footsteps, but also see the places where he lived, worked and was inspired. Walk past the places where he once stood and view the countryside through his own eyes – as if you are walking through a living painting!
Please note that driving time is approximately 4 hours in total (both ways). The rest of the time is for visits, breaks and walks.

Van Gogh Village Museum Nuenen
The museum depicts Vincent van Gogh’s life in Nuenen, the Netherlands, and highlights the significance of his Brabant period for his complete body of work. The beginnings of his first masterwork, The Potato Eaters, and his pursuit of that goal through countless studies of hands, heads, and peasants may be found here. The museum always has a temporary exhibition on view. Throughout the year, these exhibits undergo multiple changes.
This is a child-friendly activity. Young visitors can discover the museum using the ‘In search of Vincent’ discovery trail. It can be used by children from the youngest to the upper years of primary education: anyone can go on a voyage of discovery. The booklet contains colouring sheets and spaces to make their own pictures. When they have finished, the young guests will receive a nice certificate. They can take their certificate and discovery trail booklet home with them, including their own masterpieces of course!
Vincents Lightlab
An unusual feature of the museum is Vincents Lightlab. You can discover the effects of light and colour for yourself in a surprising way, just as Vincent did. Experience how light and colour work and discover whether you see things with your eyes or with your brain.
Vincent’s first masterwork clearly demonstrates his search for light. “Copper and green soap-like tones, but that this drawing back will, I hope, be twofold, namely that I hope to paint some in a lighter spectrum, more flesh and blood – but equally am searching for something that’s even more green soap and coppery,” he wrote in a letter to his brother Theo, explaining that darker shades do, in fact, have plenty of color. This led to the creation of his first masterwork, a vibrant yet gloomy painting that was illuminated solely by an oil lamp.
Walks “Out and about with Vincent”
We are reminded of Van Gogh in no fewer than 24 places in Nuenen. A walk might be a great addition to your museum visit. You can see what Vincent saw and painted in this way. It resembles strolling through one of his artworks. Using the booklet “Out and about with Vincent,” available in English. You can also have a solo stroll.
There are two walks:
Village Walk: A 2-kilometer walk will take you past Van Gogh sites through the village. Suitable for anyone and easy walk.
Countryside Walk: In this 3.5-kilometer walk you’ll discover inspiring locations outside the village where quotes from Vincent’s letters come to life. Suitable for anyone and easy walk.
